Keep Calm and Carry On

I am not one for loose ends.  Once I start something, I like to finish.  Dot the 'i', cross the 't'.  So our Phase I move-in this week is testing my limits.

My running internal conversation goes something like this:

Moose flag and moose
metal sculpture near
front porch
"The snow is melting - everything looks like a mud pit - I can't show that on my blog."

"What an opportunity to demonstrate you are letting go of perfection."

"Despite all my efforts, the movers didn't get the piano onto the lower level."

"The piano is undamaged and even sounds in tune".
Piano originally belonged to my maternal
great-grandfather Clem

"Boxes basically everywhere.  Dining room chairs in the master bedroom until we get protectors on the legs.  Yikes!"

"How blessed you are to have this house.  OK!"

Original paperwork from
June 23, 2016
So, now that I have my attitude firmly planted on the positive end of the spectrum, let me start at the beginning, June 23, 2016, the day that two-thirds of our household possessions were packed and transferred to a United Van Lines warehouse near Cleveland, Ohio.  And on March 19, 2018, Billy, Eric and Levi delivered them to our new house near Kila, Montana.

We'd had a couple of inches of snow overnight, which made for serene views but less than ideal moving conditions.  The guys quickly determined that it would not be safe to maneuver the piano down the hill to the lower level (sad face).  I will not bore you with the details ('cause my attitude is in the right place!), but we had worked very hard ahead of time to ensure this would not be an obstacle.  Oh well.  Ultimately, the moving company agreed to come back when the weather is better and transfer the piano to its proper place (at no charge to us).

Elsie's Corner Unit

Over a three-hour period, the truck slowly emptied.  It was a bit like Christmas to watch items emerging.  The corner unit, which was purchased with hard-won savings by Spousal Unit's maternal grandmother.

The dining room table and chairs, along with the hutch.

The family room furniture that has seen 5 houses and 10 Super Bowl parties, and now occupies the lower level.  (My attitude creeps in again when I ask myself if the red/green colors work with the blue walls ....)

The overstuffed formal living room furniture looks like it was made for the loft - and you can still see the divot in the cushion that was Maggie's (the cat) go-to sleeping spot for many years.  (We are going to need some decorative cushions/throws to add some color here .... sorry, can't help myself!)

First meal at the dining room table
Paperwork complete, Billy, Eric and Levi drove off and left us to satisfy our noisy stomachs with home-made vegetarian chili, and our eyes with the view from the dining room table.

Soon I will bring my spotting scope to the house, and perhaps I will see these critters through it in real time, rather than after the fact via our trail cam.
Note how hind legs are sinking deeply into the snow
Running through the snowflakes

Breaking through fresh snow

We wrapped the day, tackling a couple of dish boxes.  It's probably no coincidence that wine and beer glasses were near the top!

Tomorrow we return to carry on.

  5. ...such a lovely home, but I sure hate moving! For my next move they will have to carry me out feet first. I love the seasons, but mud season isn't one of my favorite. Your jelly beans are making me hungry. Enjoy.

  25. Exciting, and tiring at the same time - we moved 4 years ago from Southern Calif. so it sill seemed lake a month ago! Angie, don't worry about colors. because your walls are logs! Added, I think the blue wall with your red/green looks lively! Also mix and match are now very modern:)
Love your room with the table, chairs, hutch and chandelier - so classic! Have a great time putting things together, Blog Friend!

  27. Oh what a job - but the reward will be wonderful - all that space and all that beauty... can't wait to see more unpacking and decorating. I too like to see a project finished after once starting and find it hard to find a stopping place - though this has decreased some with retirement and age. Enjoy each step of unpacking the treasures my dear.

the deer in the snow is so beautiful. They are cute critters.
Have a good time with your moving!

  30. Hi Angie. "Nearly there" I'm thinking but then I'm not a perfectionist like you and I can imagine you wanting everything 101%. Only then might you declare "finished"?

You new home looks so spacious, especially so for two (?) to rattle around in. Wonderful views or at least from my point of view they will be when spring and summer arrive and bring emerging wildlife and warm sunshine.

  31. Wonderful post. It seems you have found a beautiful house at a great location overthere, congratulations.

  34. Pretty hind! They are struggeling in the snow.
Moving is hard work. Last time, the movers had to call for a hoist to move our large piano from second floor.

  35. Wow, looks like a dream house you are moving into. I have moved a bunch of times in my life and hate it worse every time. I would rather take a beating.

  37. Wow - I know exactly what you are going through, it looks so wonderfully peaceful in your new place. All those beautiful wooden floors and the view (and I might add fresh air!) I did have a chuckle at your pleasure in finding your wine glasses it reminded me of my packing up hysteria to find the first thing packed was the kettle - I mean surely everyone knows the kettle is needed until the very last moment and should be the first thing to come out?! Thank you for contributing to the debate on elephant polo, it was lovely to have your visit :)

  41. Hi Angie-
Thanks for your visit to my site and your kind comment.
I have never been that close to a Buffalo before and I really wasn't even thinking about a Buffalo attack. I appreciate the word of wisdom though.

Moving across state-lines, especially to Montana, can be a challenge. Glad y'all are handling it very well. We have family in MT and do know how cold it gets there :)

    Enjoy the new digs.

    Have a Happy Day!
    Peace :)

  43. How exciting! Your story sounds so much like ours, at least in the packing so long ago and just now seeing your things again. Your house is just so lovely and I like your attitude about just knowing you are blessed to have your house. When I get frustrated, I try to put it in that perspective too.

  44. Dearest Angie; Wow, moving I've ever experienced was when I was 15 years old (half a century ago p;-). What an exciting and also a hard work for the wonderful gorgeous house with great furniture♡♡♡ My husband and I were SO impressed with the piano; he wondered the wood it is made of♫♫♫ It must be a really elegant scene to see someone playing with that piano.

Thank you SO much for your sweet visits, I really appreciate them.

I can imagine you sitting at the dining table and just soaking up that amazing view, mealtimes are going to be the highlight of your day from now on! So glad you shared moving in day and your internal dialogue with the MM crowd this week. Well done on remaining positive throughout it all. Looking forward to seeing more soon.

  47. I would think that, after all that time, there would be some 'surprises' that you had learned to live without. I love your inner dialog and am glad you ended up on the positive side!

  48. Enjoyed your dialogue with yourself in all the stages of this huge move. Your views are so lovely. Glad the moving company will be back to set your piano in the proper spot. We'll have to get used to the "mud season" in our new place. Looking forward to seeing more... Have a blessed Easter Week!

  51. Congratulations on move in day! It's been a long time coming but at last it has come and gone and you will have all the time and space in the world to unpack. I mentioned to you before that a log cabin is my ideal home. I also had the very same fabric (Native American print) in my last sofa set though mine didn't have any wood on the outside just fabric. I loved it and had it for many years.
