#1 Daughter gave me a drawing book for Christmas, along with a set of markers. I have featured some of my drawings, inspired by that book, in three previous posts (2/2, 3/14 and 4/7). But lately I have taken it up a notch due to a secret project (you will see it eventually) and an idea I had earlier this year.
And I am delirious with the joy of the process and the outcomes.
As you might predict, I am learning as I go along, and I think my lessons learned are delivering improved quality drawings. Here are "Angie's
A-Ha Moments":
ONE: Draw in pencil first. It will erase, unlike marker and colored pencils!

THREE: If I complete the drawing in stages - pencil, marker, erase; pencil, marker, erase - I can draw over the marker with pencil but only where I want, thereby creating the illusion of objects being behind or on top of each other. So excited about this discovery!
FOUR: A ruler is my friend. Especially if straight words are important! I found my lettering tends to slant upward as I move right to left - pencil lines to guide my lettering helps tremendously, and the lines can be erased! No one needs to know! (But now I guess you do ....)
FIVE: Inspiration can come from anywhere, such as this bookmark that I picked up at the library check-out counter.
SIX: When looking for fonts for a particular theme, Pinterest is my go-to source!

SEVEN: It's good to let a drawing percolate overnight, or even a day or two. Sometimes I like it more when I haven't been staring at it, and sometimes it helps me discern what needs to be improved.
EIGHT: I may need a wider variety of colored pencils.

ReplyDeleteHow wonderful!! Looks great. You may want to try out some of these markers my oldest discovered. They are called shading markers. She got them at Michaels. They work like watercolors. Happy Mother's Day! :) Kit

ReplyDeleteWell we BOTH have the same FEVER! I showed a little of my art this morning too. And I sketch with a pencil then erase it some if I'm doing water color, then go over it with pen. In my sketchbook I'm using colored pencils. And I'm absolutely loving it all! I've never done this type of art before and it's amazing! I bought a color wheel last week to learn more about colors. I love your idea of going over the pen with the pencil. I'll try that. There are so many wonderful tutorials but mostly I'm just playing around. But I'm doing some art every day so that I can get more relaxed. Wouldn't we have fun together? Happy MM! Hugs, Diane

ReplyDeleteYou are having so much fun ... and you have so much talent! I like the idea of the monthly theme (even a non-artist could do something with that idea...couldn’t I?). Fun reading the spines on your reading material (book covers are one thing I miss about reading on Kindle). Didn’t know about the new (or maybe old?) Kristin Hannah. I will check on that when I visit my (on-line) Library later this morning.

ReplyDeleteYour drawings are very nice. I do love to doodle and draw but am not so concerned about the outcome. I just enjoy the process and, of course, with me, more is always a good thing. I tend to not leave a lot of white space. :) (If you see my walls at home, you will understand.)

I really like your art work Angie. Drawing is not a talent of mine though it's on my bucket list one day to take lessons and practise. It's just that I have no many interests and don't want to stretch myself too thin. I do like to crochet, sew, knit (in that order). Have a wonderful weekend.
