Mosaic Monday #147: On the road again

In early August, #1 Son received the long-awaited news: he landed a job, a nuclear engineering position within the Idaho National Laboratory.  I jumped up and down for joy; he has been in job search mode since May 2020, and all of us were thrilled for him that his patience and perseverance paid off!

As I write this, we are in Idaho Falls, the largest town closest to the Lab.  (As you can see in the photo above, the facility is in the middle of "nowhere", by design!  Part of the company benefit package is a tour bus that transports employees to and from the site each day.)  #1 Son is required to obtain a security clearance, a process that could take until January.  Nevertheless, given the scarcity of housing in the West, we deemed it wise to take a road trip to look at apartments and put his name on the waiting list.

Never ones to miss out on an opportunity to explore, we turned the trip into a mini-vacation.  An art museum, a walk along the Snake River, the Aquarium, the Zoo, the Craters of the Moon National Monument, and a visit to a nearby city, Twin Falls.  We also took advantage of the plethora of unique restaurants here - many more than we have back at home!

So, this will be a short post - just having too much fun to write anything longer!

And if any of this sounds familiar, it is because we visited Idaho Falls and Craters of the Moon last fall (see Road Trippin' and Going to the Moon).  Little did we know then that #1 Son would be living here!!!!

Welcome to Mosaic Monday, a weekly meme where we get together to share our photo mosaics and collages.
Please include at least one photo mosaic/collage in your post.
The link will be open from 1 p.m. Sunday until 11 p.m. Tuesday (U.S. Mountain time).

  8. Congrats to your son. A new chapter with new adventures to be had. And luckily he's not so far away. My youngest works from home but has been applying for a while now for something different and says it pretty much sucks. :) Have a good week.

  14. Congratulations to son. I think it is probably a great place to work. I have several relatives who worked there from back in the cold war days so I still don't know what they did. The bus rides to and from work are legendary. They talked about bridge games and other amusements that went on for a long time.
    I love the local zoo.
Next visit, if you have time and the inclination, visit the Museum of Idaho. My father helped put together the western town in the basement and he used a lot of stuff from family in the exhibits. The town is co-named after him.
I hope your son enjoys the town. It has turned into a pretty cool place to be and is very outdoors recreation oriented.

  17. Good for #1 Son. It sounds like a job worth waiting for, even if it is out in the middle of nowhere. Good for you to help with locating a place for him to live. And making it into a mini-vacation made it good for you. - Margy

  19. Hooray for son landing this job that is close enough for a road trip to see him or for him to see you! Our son-in-law's work requires a clearance, too and having that from his service in the military helped. Hope all goes well with getting to the top of the waiting list for that apartment!

  22. I'm happy for your son and for you all. And I really love the way you turned the trip into a fun roadtrip and not *just* a practical one (although in this case the practical part of it was pretty darn exciting too). So cool that he will be fairly close and of course also in such an interesting and scenic place!
